Who is Mxyzptlk?

Mr. Mxyzptlk is an imp from the fifth-dimensional planet of Zrfff, who pops up occasionally in Metropolis to annoy Superman, using his fifth-dimensional science (which to us is magic).  The only way that Superman can send this pest home is to trick him into saying his name backwards.

He first appeared as a bald, green-suited dwarf named Mr. Mxyztplk in Superman #30.  The debut of Mxy's orange and purple outfit came in Superman #103.  Over the years, his name was often misspelled.  The name was permanently changed to Mr. Mxyzptlk starting with Superman #131.  In Action Comics #583, part of the "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" storyline, Mxyzptlk appeared, but this time transformed from impish to truly evil.

The modern, post-Crisis Mxyzptlk arrived in Superman V2 #11.  A different version of Mxy appeared as twin brother and sister encyclopedia salesmen in Adventures of Superman #617 & 618.  Most recently, Mxyzptlk's has been appearing in a Secret Files story and an Adventures of Superman run, with a look that is a bit of a hybrid of some of Mxy's previous looks.  In Adventures of Superman 646, Mxyzptlk found himself with diminished powers as a result of the events in the Day of Vengeance storyline.  While helping Superman track down Ruin, Mxy threw himself in front of a kryptonite spear designed to kill Supes.  Thus, in saving Superman's life, Mxyzptlk was killed.

How do you pronounce his name?

Some claim it's pronounced MIX-yez-PIT-lick, others MIX-yez-PIT-tull-ick. I prefer the latter.  In the Super Friends cartoons, the name was phonetically altered to MIX-ul-PLIK, a slightly easier word to say both forward and backward.

Who has played Mxyzptlk on television?

In the 1960's Filmation cartoons, Mxy was voiced by Gilbert Mack for the episode "The Imp-practical Joker."  Later, in the Superfriends series, he was voiced by Frank Welker in several episodes.  In the Superboy series of the 1980's, Michael J. Pollard portrayed the imp twice.  Following that was an appearance on Lois & Clark:  The New Adventures of Superman, with Howie Mandel playing him in the episode "Twas the Night Before Mxymas."  Gilbert Gottfried provided the voice for Mxy in Superman:  The Animated Series.  Most recently, Mikhail Mxyzptlk appeared on Smallville in the episode "Jinx," and was played by Trent Ford

So why do you have a page devoted to this character?

I'm a film and t.v. editor (click here for my resume and demo clips).  On a daily basis, I'm given a set "reality" on videotape, and I then alter that reality at my will to create the story I want to tell.  In looking at characters with whom I can identify, Mxyzptlk's ability to bend Superman's reality to his will seemed to remind me of what I do on a daily basis.

Then one day, as a joke, I decided to see if an approximation of his name was available as a license plate.  It was.  If you ever see a car with MXZPTLK plates, that's probably me.  Honk and wave.

Another reason that I like this character is because so few artists have had the opportunity to draw him.  In many cases, the pieces you'll find on this site are the first ever drawings of the character by a given artist.  Hopefully, this makes the sketching a little more fun for the artists, too.

You don't have any prices listed for the artwork.  Why not?

That's because I'm an art collector, not an art dealer.  The art is on this site for display and sharing purposes only.    For those looking to purchase artwork, I've listed several of my favorite art dealers on the links page.

I have a page with Mxyzptlk on it.  Are you interested in buying it?
